Ritesh Kumar, InterContinental Fiji’s Chef de Partie in Navo, was named Chef of the Year 2013 with a total of two gold and two silver medals. With a total of 360 chefs from around the country competing competition was fierce. Nine chefs represented InterContinental Fiji in this year’s competition, collectively claiming 4 gold, 6 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
“I am thrilled to have been awarded this honour,”says Ritesh. “I love cooking. For me, it’s all about discovering the culture of Fiji through the colour, flavour and texture of food. There is nothing as satisfying as seeing the look of absolute delight on guests’ faces when they fall in love with that first bite; their first experience of a new dish.”
No less impressive is the result gained by Saleshni Gounder, who was named Fiji Barista of the Year 2013. Saleshni was runner up in 2012 but returned this year to take the title, despite solid competition from barista’s representing Sofitel, Novotel and Outrigger on the Lagoon. However Saleshni’s attention to detail, her focus and consistency in the quality of her coffee quality put her in a league of her own – the technical judges struggled to fault her work stating that she had ‘a near perfect score’.
According to Saleshni, “Coffee is an important part of the day for many of our guests, and we work hard to provide the best coffee experience that we can. Fiji’s coffee culture has come a long way in the last few years.”
Brendan Lane-Mullins, InterContinental Fiji’s Director of Food & Beverage says, “We are very proud of Ritesh, Saleshni, and the whole InterContinental Fiji team who endeavor daily to deliver five-star Fijian hospitality and enriching holiday experiences. These achievements are not only a credit to the resort, but to all who help make Natadola Bay Fiji’s premier destination for world-class dining and luxurious beachfront accommodation.”
