Hospitality Brand Leads the Way in Environmental and Social Responsibility by Introducing Compostable Single-Use Cups

26th September 2023 (Natadola, Fiji): As part of IHG’s Journey To Tomorrow initiative, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel and Holiday Inn Suva proudly announce the introduction of compostable single-use water and coffee cups, reaffirming its commitment to both the environment and the local community. Partnering with Fijian-owned manufacturers Portion Pak and Rise Beyond the Reef, this move sets a remarkable precedent for the hospitality industry.

The newly unveiled single-use water and coffee cups, adorned with captivating Fijian-inspired designs by Rise Beyond the Reef, a local non-profit organisation, underscore the resort's dedication to blending sustainability with cultural appreciation. This collaboration not only promotes environmental protection but also empowers local artists and charitable initiatives.

"At IHG Hotels & Resorts in Fiji, we believe in making a positive impact. Our transition to compostable single-use water and coffee cups is not just a change in practice but a statement of our dedication to preserving the natural beauty of Fiji and supporting its communities. This initiative aligns with our broader sustainability goals and reflects our ethos of responsible luxury." commented Lachlan Walker, Portfolio General Manager – IHG Hotels & Resorts, FNPF Owned Hotels.

Recognising the urgency of addressing tourism-generated waste, Portion Pak, an environmental pioneer with over 23 years of experience in manufacturing eco-friendly products, has taken its commitment a step further. These innovative certified home compostable cups replace conventional cups' laminated plastic lining with a water-based 'ink' technology. As a result, these cups compost alongside organic waste, presenting a compelling solution to the pervasive issue of single-use plastics in the hospitality sector.

Estimates suggest that 5-10 million* takeaway cups are imported and used in Fiji annually, contributing to the mounting landfill and environmental degradation. Portion Pak's revolutionary water and coffee cups and lids offer a game-changing alternative, marking the first instance where such items can be effectively composted in Fiji. Larger establishments like resorts stand to eliminate tens of thousands of single-use cups and lids virtually overnight, fostering a cleaner and greener environment.

Contrary to existing claims of compostable and biodegradable products, often mere greenwashing attempts, Portion Pak's technology stands out as an authentic solution. The company's partnership with BioPak, an industry leader in environmentally friendly food packaging, has enabled Fiji to be among the pioneering nations to receive this transformative innovation.

However, the story doesn't end with environmental benefits. Portion Pak has gone a step further by collaborating with Fiji's very own Rise Beyond the Reef charitable organisation. Not only do these cups showcase vibrant local designs, but 5% of every cup's value goes directly to supporting Rise Beyond the Reef's school-based programs, demonstrating a commitment to environmental and social upliftment.

The resort's swift replacement of over 50,000 plastic cups at drink stations with 6oz Rise Beyond the Reef cups has already kickstarted the journey towards a more sustainable future. Be sure to check them out on your next stay and tag us on @interconfiji @holidayinnsuva @grandpacificfiji

These cups will be thoughtfully composted on-site, enriching the resort grounds and leaving 50,000 fewer plastic cups in Fiji's pristine landscapes. IHG Fiji's pioneering step towards sustainability signifies a harmonious blend of innovation, culture, and environmental consciousness. With this move, the resort strengthens its position as an industry leader and ambassador of Fiji's natural resources.
